Agharta, yeah, i know it's live and that Miles is the star of the show but without Michael Henderson's bass as a platform some of the solos , no matter who the musician is, wouldn't have the same kinda impetus. I only heard this for the first time a couple of years ago otherwise i'd probably be bangin' on about Bootsy.

Bootsy's Rubber Band's first 3 LPs are the real deal. M. Henderson's bass playing w/ Miles has always struck me as cliche-ridden phoning it in. Never understood the fuss about him; bores the daylights outta me. Also, Magma's UduWudu and Kohntarkosz LPs are lead by some sick bass from Janik Top. The PiL votes are valid, but you know where that comes from...Dub & Reggae, anyone? Blackbeard's "Iwah Dub" is just one of hundreds of dub lps I could name here.

How about Ned's Atomic Dustbin's "God Fodder"? They had two bass players... but were a bit rubbish.

Almost every Grateful Dead live album - especially those post-releases mixed by Lesh himself...

Walsalls Dave Holland; Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson etc.. Emerald Tears on ECM is a good one I quite like Hooveling which I hear him play at Brummagem Conservatory. Don't think he plays the Bass Guitar much though. Not to be confused with Cannocks Dave Holland - Judas Priest, and HMP Stafford.

Lots of Rush, Om (as mentioned above), Stanley Clarke stuff, if you like that type of thing, which I do. Howsabout early New Model Army, especially the Vengeance album? Elements of Joy Division and some New Order? Early Sisters of Mercy stuff, especially the early 12"s?
