Opinions are like assholes . . .

. . . some are just louder and more pungent than others.

One of the reasons I like reading this forum is that people talk about and praise music that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. But debating what is the worst cd ever . . . c'mon. I bet if we went to the Chris deburgh forums, they could have a paralell thread about the Odin album. 70 minutes of breathing. Think about it. If you didn't like Cope and someone told you about that, you'd probably think it should be sold next to some shimmering crystals in a new age shop. Sure, I like it, but you really can't debate taste. Have you actually heard this cd, or are these opinions based on your distaste for the 'covers album', no matter who the subject.

I happen to love that Sinead album, and can't really understand how someone could hate it. Her vocals are perfectly suited to the music, it features Sly and Robbie, they recorded it with a lot of the studio musicians who played on the original songs, and it's great music. Maybe if you were some kind of purist snob, but who really cares about those kind of opinions (which tend to be the only kind on those pitchforkmedia kind of sites).

I'm not saying you can't have a laugh at Chris deburgh, I wouldn't buy it either, but people don't make horrible music on purpose. The only thing that makes it good or bad is your taste, and more often than not, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the music. Consumer distinction plays a key role in the type of music you purchase. Celine Dion is a talented singer, and has produced some amazing music throughout her career (millions of copies sold, countless awards, loyal fans) yet some people wouldn't even think about owning one of her cds because it holds no distinction of showing good taste. Same goes for all consumer products, which is basically what is being debated, however tongue-in-cheek you may want it to be.

Horses for courses, I love Sinead O'Connor but I think the reggae album stinks to high heaven, imho it shows all the weaknesses in her voice, her range is totally unsuitable for the songs and it adds absolutely nothing to the originals.
Same with the Patti Smith album, bad song choice, lousy polished production and again nothing added to the songs.
As for Chris De Burgh, as a youth I had a best of that I enjoyed on a sunny afternoon with a few pints, but again IMHO he represents everything that is wrong with a certain type of musician, he hit it big with Lady In Red and has stuck with the same gloopy formula since, Celine Dion may have millions of fans but I have read interviews where she has said she has no interest in music, therefore I have no interest in her, though I'm still impressed by the fact that the released version of the Titanic song was only the 3rd time she ever sang it. Music is objective, and I have no quarrel with for want of a better word MOR, but I can happily listen to The Who by Numbers or Supertramps Even In The Quietest moment and know they were made to be listened to by people who wanted a bit of something more relaxed, whereas I cannot for the life of me see what for example anyone can see in a Coldplay record, or even anything by AC/DC in the last 20 years as it's just pap by numbers

I liked the one about the Spainish Train, it was like a mental surbuban Bat Out of Hell.
You have to remember this was the 70s and you had to take your entertainment where you could find it

why pick that one? would've thought it'd be the opposite from what I know of your tastes.
even ironically seems like a weird choice.

I wasn't being tongue-in-cheek except for the "obvious and indisputable fact" bit. I do dislike that album a lot. Maybe it's due to over-exposure (my elder bro used to play it to death when it got came out), but it smacks too much of lame, affected, theatrical angst to me - plus the lyrics seem about as bad as sixth-form poetry gets (I mean, opening an album with "It doesn't matter if we all die?" Like, yeah dude, that's a real insightful take on the human condition you've got there).

Maybe I wouldn't mind so much if it had a few decent tunes to support it -like the earlier, more poppy Cure albums have - but all I can hear on that record is a relentless, grinding, morbid cacophony. Sure, you could
level that same accusation at some of the bands I do like - the Birthday Party or early Swans, for instance - but both of them sound far more convincingly unhinged than Robert Smith to me.

Oh, I can match you on the confession front, no problem!

Not sure I qualify as a big city boy, mind, though I did once cross the border and have my tea in Chester! ; )
