On the contrary, intelligence is what is required to appreciate and understand his work.

This Charming Man is lyrically leagues above most pop/rock song words.
Poetry put to music - sublime.

Panic and its 'Hang the DJ' line is an incredibly witty song IMO.

National Front Disco is a song (albeit in poor taste) about someone 'lost' to the NF and their mistaken beliefs in it being the right way of life. If this is misrepresented, misinterpreted or lazily taken on face value then so be it.

Each to their own as you say.
