Lee Scratch Perry and Black Ark

This is a great website, with great podcasts.

I find myself coming back time and again to Perry's Black Ark period. Some real magic happened there with a 4 trax machine that now with our Pro Tools passes us by.

Fantastic site. Thank you. Cleared up a couple of long standing queries verifying sources etc in a matter of seconds. Brilliant.

As for the four track thing there's a lot to be said for having to make an irreversible sonic decision in the heat of the creative moment and stick to it. The more options we have the longer it takes people to get anything done.

As a true improviser Perry is in many ways more of a jazz artist than a pop producer. I think of him more like Miles and Sun Ra than King Tubby or Joe Gibbs let alone Marley or Burning Spear. Though as a hit maker there was a lot of Larry Parnes and Berry Gordy in there too.

The sad thing about Scratch is the amount of unutterable shit that has been released in his name in recent years and recordings that he barely touched being emblazoned with is imprimateur. I feel sorry for anyone dipping their toes in for the first time who stray very far beyond the Trojan, Island, Pressure Sounds compilations that cover the Black Ark period. There be monsters!

There was an excellent extended Perry primer in Grand Royal magazine in the mid 90s. I may well have it somewhere.

Excellent site Z

Regarding the 4 track / Pro Tools thing - you're right - it's all about the ideas, creativity and craftmanship of the person and not the fancy gear!

You know, I've noticed that the digital tools revolution in music, film, etc. has created something of a monster.
Not that the technology is to blame, but how many times have you listened to a track or watched a flick where it seems the tools have overtaken the art?

Film editing on a digital system, especially, seems to bring out the worst in some artists... the cutting in some action films is so damn fast you can't even tell what you're looking at half the time.

Is anyone here familiar with the Skatalites?

If so can I direct you to a very early morning show (ebs..early breakfast show) on BBC Radio Shropshire by Ian Perry. The Theme tune he uses as a DJ bed is by the aforementioned, and I would like to know what the tune is. It has a wobbly trumpet.

Sadly BBC Shropshire do not have his 5 am to 6 am show on 'listen again', which is a shame as not only is it an occasional surreal flight of fancy, its easily the best show on that station, so you will have to tune in or have it live streamed
