45 Revolutions
Nov 29, 2005, 18:19
There is a book coming out in the new year cataloguing hundreds of British Punk and Post-Punk DIY records. I was in a pretty rubbish Redditch based band who cobbled some cash together and did a 7" single. It was badly mixed and pressed and nobody wanted a copy. Our bassist who had stored all the unsold copies for a few years eventually cashed them in for recycling.

About twelve months ago I got a call from a specialist Punk and Mod record company, who somehow had tracked me down (honest!), asking if they could pass my details on to the writers as they'd like to ask me some questions about the band's history, whereabouts today and the recording sessions. I have since been called by two guys; one from Italy and one based in Holland several times and have been interogated me by email, too. About something that we saw as being a bit of a laugh back in 1979!!

Needless to say, I thought it was all a joke at my expense. But no. The book (as far as I know) will be called 45 Revolutions - and it will be out in the spring. It will feature hundreds of angry and melodic young bands of that period - some of whom made it, most of whom faded away.

KC, a mate of mine got in touch with me a while back, saying a mate of his "was compiling a book of all independent releases in the UK between 1976 and 1980/82.
I think he said that the bloke who is doing the book, now lives in Holland.
I was giving info to my mate and he was relaying it to the 'compiler'.
The info he wanted concerned two 45s from the north-east wales area...

The Grids -'New Anthems ep' on Kings Head Records (!)
from 1980.
This was a holywell punk band whose bass guitarist was Garteh Jones aka Gaz Top!...who later presented 'How 2'

Hieronymous Bosch - Rocking Rachmaninov (forget label) 1980
I forwarded the email address of the ex-singer, who now happens to live down the road here in manchester.

It must be noted that this lost single is also a Desert Island Disc of our very own *Keith A* ;-)

It's just got to be the same book!
I'll contact my mate and let you know!

The Grids real claim to fame was that Jello Biafra was a fan and sported a Grids Badge on the cover of a DK video (but I've never seen it) bless 'em ;-)

Yes, I am indeed the proud owner of the said Hieronymus Bosch single!

I reviewed a New York band of the same name last year (who's name has now been shortened to The Bosch) where I mentioned the old N Wales band of the same name. A short while back later I got an email from someone about how he liked the band. Seems like me and JT aren't the only folk who remember them. I bump into the guitarist occasionally so will mention this to him if he gets a mention.

And congrats to KC, too. What were your band called?

"And congrats to KC, too. What were your band called?"

Sorry, I can't possibly tell you that on here. It was a dreadful band name to match everything else dreadful about the single. When the book comes out - and if I see a copy, I'll tell you the page number.

...oh the shame.

If most members of most of the bands featured buy one copy, it'll be quuite a good seller, I reckon. You can't fail publishing that sort of book.
