I was gonna say pretty much what Moon Cat said really. Acid House was a cultural phenomenon in Britain that is much more important than just the music. Having said that, it was of its time and the label Acid House didn't last long over here anyway. And the music all sounding 'the same' is actually part of the point, to aid seemless DJing.

Basically, Acid House and the explosion of rave culture was a vital period in the history of youth culture in Britain and it cetainly didn't feel hyped at the time. It felt revolutionary and was scaring the pants of our parents and politicians like any youth movement should. Not so much because of the music, but because of the drugs and the massive collective 'Fuck You' by a disenchanted and disenfanchised youth directed at an adult world still smugly writhing around in the worst excesses of Thatcher's politics.

Divorce the music from this social context and I can see how you might feel let down. But to anyone who was part of the whole thing, Acid House was definitely not just hype.
