I can see that boot coming towards my face. Everyone's faces. Forever. (Rhiannon. Do try to be more upbeat).

christ have I missed something, they're ditching it already? they've only been in two minutes. How do they even get the chance to take back something that's actually European law? how is that possible?? I didn't think it was going to be as easy as gove just turning up and getting his cronies to vote for his new plan. and besides judging by the british electorate's marvellous decision-making lately, can we trust ourselves with a referendum on anything uh i am too ignorant and things are even worse than I thought

Replacing it with a "British Bill of Rights", because as British people we prefer our basic human rights to be conditional and come with provisos and restrictions than simply being absolute. For a reminder, here's our rights under the Human Rights Act: The right to life The right not to be tortured The right not to be a slave The right to a fair trial The right NOT to be punished if you haven’t broken the law The right to private family life The right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion The right to freedom of expression The right to marry and start a family The right to peaceful enjoyment of possessions The right to education The right to free elections The right NOT to be given to death penalty Another reason to be unhappy is that the Daily Mail is urging the government to scrap the HRA, so it must be worth fighting to keep :)

It's worth pointing out that the issue with the Human Rights Act is a bit more complex than it first appears. Although the tories are planning to repeal it from British law (actually, English & Welsh law... it will remain on the statute book in Scotland and Northern Ireland) people in England and Wales are still technically covered by it. Merrick explains it here... Repealing Our Humanity

Hi Rhiannon Can I just bump this back to the top as this to me seems to the real reason why the BREXIT vote is so important and the reason that is being hidden the deepest. It seems to me that the electorate are being blindsided. some hope that sanity might prevail in france yesterday, I see. http://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/may/03/doubts-rise-over-ttip-as-france-threatens-to-block-eu-us-deal Why is this subject not being reported properly? It's got the potential to become some mad dystopian nightmare. I had the occasion to look at the sun's website recently, I know it would be asking a lot to expect TTIP to be on their front page (or any page) but I at least thought there would be some NEWS on their website - there is about 1 /100 stories that are news and the rest is boobs and scandal. I'm so naive, it's sad. But this is what the voters of Britain read, how can they have an opinion about anything but boobs and scandal. I suppose that's fine for the powers that be.

It is just being under reported. I was not aware until the weekend. Mentioning it to friends and colleagues just draws a blank. It smells of media manipulation. To me this is the biggest issue surrounding BREXIT but it's lost behind a lot of smoke and mirrors.
