"It is very worrying that these submarines, which are supposedly precision machines, couldn’t miss something the size of Skye."

Wasn't a similar technique used by a Paedophile ring recently to hide illicit photographs.

Fetch the torches!

PGP is certainly the dogs bollocks, but don't try installing version 7 on a Windows XP box. It will kill it!

Steganography
Nov 07, 2002, 13:28
Paedophiles sometimes take the bus, but everybody on a bus isn't a paedophile ( unless its the No27 to Bo'ness perhaps). IT professionals for years have hidden their dodgy files by encrypting them into other files whether it be executables or music. ( If you ever hear a slight beep in a downloaded MP3 then its probably someones information)

Steganography - sticking data into pictures allows complex communication via government or corporate websites. Before people hid ever porn, they hid 'the anarchists cookbook'. Although developed to evade censorship, it has everyday uses. For instance, your photos on Pauls websites could also contain all your favourite books, songs, sexual positions or whatever.

PGP is like sticking your email into a sealed envelope and marking it 'Secret! Please don't open'. Steganography is like a sealed envelope that looks like a photograph.

I quite like the idea of saying, 'Hey, this is secret!'.

If we all used PGP then it would be impossible for the security services to keep track of what was what.

Back in the real world, I can't be bothered encrypting most of the time.

Kx

PS. Didn't mean to suggest that everyone who uses 'Stenography' or public transport is an evil molesterer.

I would love to have something that I needed to encrypt. All my subversive and treasonous thoughts are open to anybody's scrutiny. In fact, visit various watering holes after ten any night of the week and you may have no choice in the matter.

Now I can hide secrets I'm determined to get some worth hiding.
If we all encrypted then it would make life a pain for the secret police, and Jim is right, it takes 5 minutes to set up. Although any encryption can be cracked, its a pain so they developed mass distributed keystroke-grabbers like Magic Lantern to steal your passwords and keys. Also, they have fairly draconian laws when it comes to encryption.

i have version PGP freeware verision7.0.3 installed on XP Pro and it works fine. You just need to choose the custom install option and make sure you *don't* install PGPnet.

I have to go for Beta 8 cos I'm on a Mac with OS X. I'm waiting to hear if it's any good at the moment.

Anyone know?

You can't get the staff these days, that's what it is. If you remember, they managed to tear a big hole in a very expensive warship recently. Yet again, simply by NOT LOOKING WHERE THEY ARE GOING. I know subs don't have windows, but they do have little light or a beep or something they are supposed to pay attention to. Must have got distracted by a Loch Ness monster or a Russian sub :)
