Incredible, isn't it?

I've actually heard people who rail against 'welfare sponges' cast admiration towards guys like Bernie Madoff. Perhaps the people at the bottom would get more respect if they were more ambitious in their greed? That's the impression.

And even more incredibly, I've seen the above attitude expressed in some 'Christian' circles, flying 180 degrees from their own savior's opinions regarding how the poor should be treated, and the rich's prospects for redemption. But it's obvious that the militant, capitalist version of Xtianity would have to ignore the compassionate element of that faith in order to justify the glorification of affluence.

The real Jesus was an Anarchist and Socialist. Funny that. I don't think he'd go down very well these days either. Too radical. A genuine revolutionary as well as a Mystic - none of this meek and mild/Son of God bullshit that was superimposed upon him 300 years after his execution as a political rebel.

I've always said that if the real Jesus returned the Xtians would crucify him all over again.

We all know how the right wing Xtians view socialism these days....

Yes, symptomatic of this board..no serious political alternatives...and URL's to crap Youtube music videos. Some of you guys need to have a serious look at yourselves...and recognise that you are simply living in a f*cking dream world. That said.. it's fun here ...isn't it"?

Let me ask you a few questions Geoffrey.

Firstly, do you believe that growth is possible for ever within a finite system?

Secondly, do you believe that Capitalism is possible without growth?

And finally, if you think the answer to both those questions is "no", what do you propose as an alternative?

OK, but help me out...
You say..
Firstly, do you believe that growth is possible for ever within a finite system?
..What do you mean by "finite system"?

Secondly, do you believe that Capitalism is possible without growth?

..what do you mean by "growth"?

If you can be clear on the questions you have..I will do my best to reply.
many thanks..

I mean a system that is closed. Effectively, I mean at a global level. We cannot currently grow away from this planet. Thus we are limited to growing upon it. The amount of energy available to us is limited to what the sun provides. This amount, although large, is finite, as is the available land area, quantity of useful and recoverable resources, etc.

Is it possible to continue to expand the amount of these resources that you utilise indefinitely?

By growth, I mean the increase, over time, in the rate of utilisation of those resources.
