Windpower on the end of a string

This is a really interesting approach to dealing with some of the limitations of traditional fixed, bladed wind turbines.

I have super-8 footage from the late seventies showing a relative of mine flying a kite that uses the exact same design (without the helium). On a moderately windy day it could really torque up pretty good out on the end of that line.

Gets rid of the problem of torque transmission putting stress loads onto the structure of the house, as happens with domestic wind turbines too.

I like the way you can pay out more line if the winds are better higher up. I suppose you'd want to put lights on them to keep low flying aircraft from crashing into them.
Seems they'd be less harmful to migrating birds- less surface area, no large disk of swirling blades.
The cost is less, too... ground prep is minimal... just some sort of anchor and the electrical parts.

Only thing I can see that might be a downside is that weight limitations would seriously limit the size of the alternating generators that are attached to the axle. How heavy would they have to be to produce a significant amount of power to a dwelling?

There seems to be much to discover in that area.. A friend of mine has been designing all kinds of "wind yoni's" from recycled scrap, supposed to be quite effective too..

I didn't find a link to those. But here's some interesting points too..:

interesting. thanks for posting this. As part of my job I work with invenors to help develop and commercialise their ideas, and I am currently working with a guy who has come up with something that has similarities to this (it also has several fundamental differences, which I can't reveal 'cos I am bound by client confidentiality). Anyway, we're currently looking for a commercial partner and / or funding to help develop the idea further...hopefully we will see his idea realised in the future!
