It's been proven without a doubt that abstinence-only educational plans are a failure.. the rate of teen pregnancies actually INCREASED under it in the schools where it was tried.

Yep; kids are going to have sex whatever the grown-ups make them promise. If they've had no contraceptive education (or worse, been made to actively avoid contraception) then they're going to get pregnant.

George Monbiot did an article on it. The USA has more than ten times the number of teenage pregnancies than the Netherlands!

Less contraceptive education doesn't just mean more babies, it means a greater number of abortions too. The US has double the rate of Europe. The strongly Catholic societies of Central and South America higher still.

And yet, the evangelicals are behind it more than ever.

When you're a religious nut, science, facts... all that stuff is meaningless. Only 'faith' must be trusted. Do these idiots know there was something called the 'enlightenment'?

whilst trawling for the Monbiot links, I found a piece on his site that asserts that Christian values are stronger in secular societies.

"In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy, and abortion"

He questions whether this is religion, or welfare. Or indeed, if those two are related anyway; secularism tends to encourage welfare societies, religion. Monbiot talks of "Puritan notions that money is a sign that you’ve been chosen by God and poverty is a mark of moral weakness".

Or alternatively, as Arianna Huffington put it, "big government cheats people out of the spiritual rewards of giving to the needy".
