Smarter power grids
May 04, 2008, 16:14
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080504/ap_on_bi_ge/future_of_electricity

Along with solar and wind supplementing demand, treating power distribution networks as two-way systems could increase the efficiency of how electricity is routed.
There's going to be a big market in maximizing what does arrive to our dwellings, and perhaps soon some progress towards a less 'lossy' means of delivery- too much of what's generated evaporates into heat before it can make it to our fuse box.
Ironic that one facet of the solution to our machine age problems lies in building more machines- smarter ones, anyway.

HoD... that has always been the way surely? The solution must always lie with the problem (^_^)

I hope that one day, the menial tasks of the world ARE performed by machines; and that all of us will one-day work part-time for a DECENT living wage... happier peeps, less or zero unemployment, more "fluid and transient" money in the system due to peeps having more time to spend a decent wage.

Maybe.

Before we get to the point of hoisting all that hardware out of the gravity well we can do a hell of a lot more to quit wasting energy thru 'dumb' use.. leaving stuff on when it shouldn't be... devices that use 'trickle' power for no reason... etc.
If we maximize the efficiency of our usage, then we'll be in much better shape for when LSP becomes feasible on a commercial scale.

True

A good start would be to power all city/town and finally rural street-lighting with Oled tech. Then followed by all public buildings being lit by Oled tech; swiftly followed by bannin the production of traditional lightbulbs, and gradually lowering domestic lighting voltage to enable everyone to use Oled tech.

£Billions would be saved.

wots u r time frame for feasibility?

even in handofdaveland $15 billion a month towards clean energy is a start... it beats where it's being spent now...

we need a deadly assassin
and we need to do it today
'cuz the greed inside the greedheads ain't ever gonna go away...

This stuff is certainly a serious way forward; it doesn't just encourage reduced energy use by the consumer, but it means the demand is more constant. This means there's less firing up and switching off of power plants, which is really inefficient.

Mmm, yeah, instead of responding to the topic, let's attack the American with sarcastic references to shit he has nothing to do with.

At least the attack was by another American this time.

My mistake.

Tho I'm still curious as to why what I thought was a rational point was met with a sprawling litany of accusatory nonsequitors.
