When should you change light bulbs?

Does anyone know if it's better to change to low-energy bulbs by waiting until the incandescents go, or to throw away the incandescents asap?

My instinct is to keep the incandescents until they die, but that will take ages, and is the extra energy they burn in the meantime environmentally worse than the resources wasted by throwing them away while they still work?
