Serial killers and hangmen cheapen life. We're dealing with LIFE here! It can't hurt to have a bit of nuance and subtlety beyond, "You wish to purchase an eye? That'll be one of your own eyes, please, sir. Would you like a receipt with that? And can I possibly interest you in a tooth?" Watching a criminal who hurt you die may be a symbolic tying of a loop on their loved one's life to the grieving family, but it's a temporary palliative which comes at too high a price. They have now taken a share in ending another's life in the vain hope that it will also end their grieving process. It can only harden and distort them. That person may have been a criminal, but we turned their life into a commodity, when Life should be the one thing that can't be bartered. Of course, the broken moral compass of the criminal meant that they treated life just as lightly, but what kind of law is it that takes cues from murderers? The death penalty is retrogressive insomuch as it eschews the grey area of psychology and compassion in favour of the old archetypes of angels and demons. It promulgates the notion that career criminals who can no longer serve society, and may be an active risk to others, need to be eliminated rather than detained (on this note, executing a criminal is in fact more costly than imprisoning them).

Things like the death penalty do not exist in a bubble. They echo down through all other echelons of society. They leave a smear on a culture which says: "We do not have the wish nor the patience to deal with our incurable maladjusts in an equitable manner, so we will kill them instead". People learn by osmosis. That's how accents are formed, and that's how behaviours are formed. If the law is a steely killer, rather than a meticulous and compassionate order-maker, it can only scar the people under its protection.
