18 Nov Anti War Demo WAS Massive!
Nov 19, 2001, 10:15
Great turnout at the anti-war demo yesterday, with so many different people of all ages & denominations. Had the coincidental fortune of bumping into an old mate & a few other acquaintances we'd not seen in a few years, among the thronging thousands! It was pretty huge, and so warranted only 10 seconds of TV news coverage, while five minutes was devoted to two testosterone-fuelled meatheads punching each others lights out. Good to see the media getting their priorities right, for a change....
One thing that made me giggle, though, was on some of the banners (I think Socialist Worker but not sure) there was the following comedy e-mail address:-

Doh!!!!!!!!
I'm sure there were plenty other of you Heads there - so how was it for you?

My big sister said it was mega and that the Tv were not totally honest about the numbers present at one point i heard 15,000 but later some one said 50,000 which apparently is closer to the truth.
I hope you all helped to make a change or even just enlighten passers by
thanks

It *was* massive. Met some incredibly cool people and didn't see anything uncool going down. Good to know there are so many people who think that what's happening now is WRONG.

Any other HHers there?

SO ... First of all hats off and three big hearty cheers to all those that made it .... especially considering the following ...

Personally I was disappointed to hear that the figures may have ONLY reached 50,000. I know I didn't make it, but I was in a worse position than most British people to attend. 50,000 out of 50,000,000+ people is less than 0.1 % of the population, which is pretty shitty. Greater London alone has 25 million people!! You would expect in excess of 400,000 at a similar thing in Germany and they have just 85 million inhabitants.

Does the 0.1% turnout truly reflect the countries views or apathy. Whichever the answer we must find better ways of addressing this sad fact.

I'm proud of all who went and a little ashamed for not being there ... I was standing in four different stone circles throughout Sunday, though, sending love and peace to you all and the world.

Ride On!! March On!!

You hit the nail on the head there FW, I knew stacks of people who couldn't make the demo but were there in spirit. Whilst in Germany they may be able to pull 450,000 (can't remember a demo in Germany quite that large though correct me if I'm wrong), they have the added benefit of a fully integrated transport system, whereas if youre tavelling from, say, Wales it'll easy cost £60 odd quid for a poxy day return. I heard the figure was 100,000 the guardian has a front cover pic and quotes the 100,000 and 15,000 figures for the event.
Best bit of day - when the muslims broke their fast and invited everybody to share the grub (yum yum).

I was up all night on Saturday at a party in Leeds. At 5 to 7 in the morning I was still DJing a 70s soul & disco set while dressed as a nun in miniskirt, stockings and suspenders. At 7 I was on a coach that the party hosts had hired for the demo.

I was with the anti-capitalist and anarchist bloc near the back of the march., grooving down the road with the magnificent 60-strong samba band.

Superb to see such strngth and purpose and such positivity, no lairyness or rucks witht he cops at all, despite them cordoning the samba band and bringing in mounted riot cops behind.

And 15,000 my arse! Trafalgar Square was packed and spilling out on the road on all sides. Someone with my crew rang a mate before we'd even moved off from Hyde Park and the mate was already in Trafalgar Square!

Best slogan I saw; 'You're either for peace or with the terrorists'

Banging the drum for peace!
