It *was* a landmark speech - a towering edifice of insincerity that bestrides the political landscape like a 500ft coil of corn-studded poop. I watched about five minutes of it and found myself involuntarily shouting "for f**ks sake!" and switching over. In a strange way I felt sorry for the guy - at least Blair can "perform" when necessary(even if it is only a performance).

IDS much better at one-to-one. He got really pissed with John on the today prog this morning (see BBC page and you can listen again if you want) and at least came over as human and beleiving in what he was saying. He needs a lot more coachng for speeches

i think you are right - john major always came across much better one-to-one also and wasn't good at speeches whenever blair meets a member of the public he turns into a gibbering wreck

did you see the GWB documentary where he is on the plane with all the trendy new york lefty journalists and he's taking the mickey out of them and being genuinely funny i reckon being good at one to ones is not a recommendation for political leadership just as being good at speechmaking isn't - otherwise we'd just have kilroy who's good at both it's a bit shit that IDS is getting grief for his lack of presentation skills when he should be getting it for his terrible policy document which suggests 'streamlining' asylum application system and cutting public service spending by £3bn to fund a 1p tax cut

To the Actor Blair there is no members of the public, just an audience of voters. My money's on him getting a third term like his Idol Thatcher did, tho I hope is down fall is even more humiliating than hers. Gordon Brown is going to have to bide his time.

The whole 'fuck me, he makes Hague look good thing' is raised by Grufty Jim in his excellent blog piece on the party conferences. ===================== It's been Party Conference season here in the UK over the past few weeks. That's when the three large political parties each pitch tent in a seaside town for a few days, invite along some journalists, and pretend they're still in some way relevant to the rest of us. The obvious irony being - of course - that there's no greater reminder of the anachronistic pointlessness of party politics than The Conference. Especially this year. Because this year the upper echelons of both the tories and nuLabor spent far more time than usual telling outer party members just what an irritating irrelevance they are. The over-riding message of both party conferences was "We're not fookin' listening! So just sod off back to where you came from. No really! would you just shut up and leave me in peace while it's my turn at the trough". Though in Tony Blair's case, he did point out that he would listen to us. He just wouldn't take a blind bit of notice of what we said. Well... the man does have manners. The tory bloke... whatsisname...? Smith isn't it? He was a bit more blunt than Blair. He's not even going to listen to the dissenters. In fact, he's considering writing stern letters to them. P'raps he'll put them on double-secret probation. Although from the tone of his Landmark Speech (tm) he may well decide to brick their windows instead. What a message to the rest of the population, eh? "Hey look! We're not even listening to our own party! You know those people so dedicated to us that they'll spend a week of their holidays on us...? Yeah them... we're telling them to put up or shut up. We're telling them that they can vote against us all they like, but we ain't reversing. We're telling them that their opinions have become a bloody nuisance. So really. How relevant do you think the rest of you are...?" The entire arena of party politics has become a public relations campaign for free market capitalism. And the decision that we witnessed over the past few weeks, to overtly ignore grass roots dissent, was evidence of that writ large. =================== Full thing at http://www.cloud23.net/index.cfm?action=blog.81 |

I disagree with Jim there - IDS has been leader for a couple of years now and should be at the stage where has listened and consulted people and had votes etc and now should be preparing to get elected - I think he is right to say sack me or get behind me - problem is he's so completely uninspirational and such a total dufus that although his party wants to win so big they find themselves unable to get behind such a joker The traditional left of Labour (generally) kept their mouths shut in 1997 and ever since cause they know Blair gets them in power - it's amazing how blair is so in charge of his party in spite of the fact that so many of them hate him |
