The US are considering using the MOAB on Tikrit, Saddam's hometown. This is the 21,000 lb bomb that gets rid of everyting in a 1000 yard radius.
This could all be scare tactics by the US, but it makes me think of the link given here a while back about how the US had no need to use the atomic bomb in Japan. What I got from reading those pieces was that the decision to do so was, in the end, about showing what military power the US had available. Particularly as the Soviet Union was watching.
Using the MOAB would be an effective modern demonstration of US military power for (e.g.) Iran & Syria. With the back up message that they've got nukes as well.
