I was asking what type of instrument you use , that's all . What do you do with the info ? There are various methods of finding the alt remotely . Thom and others managedit fine decades ago , but we have a greater number of options available to us now . A combined approach is even more useful for double checking .

I have explained how to do some of them here and elsewhere for anyone who asked . If you don't know , it's not difficult to find out . As mentioned previously ,I would happily explain to most but I can't be arsed telling you .

Depending on the circumstances, I may use a watch, a compass, a clinometer, or a theodolite.
