My personal preference would be to restrict the road through the village to cars and buses only (except of access for deliveries) combined with a speed restriction of 20mph and speed bumps or priority chicanes to slow vehicles down. I would also have an extended speed restriction of 30mph between Winterbourne Bassett and the A4.
There are routes through both Marlborough and Calne (although Marlborough may need improving) which can be used to reach destinations along and beyond the A4 The above restrictions would go some way to make the route through the village less of a option for any vehicle unless specifically needing to get to Avebury or surrounding villages.

:) .

I agree with all that you have said Scubi. The discussion has been ongoing for many years now - some of us drop of the end and new people come along to keep it going. Sometimes one of them starts a petition - without thinking through the 'bigger picture' i.e. the impact on the World Heritage Site.

What has always puzzled me about the Avebury WHS is how little provision is made for pedestrians - which is all visitors once they have parked their car or alighted from a bus. There are no designated pedestrian crossings or traffic calming measures anywhere in Avebury, although most drivers do stick to the 30 mph speed restriction.
Far more dangerous, is crossing the A4 from the Ridgeway to East Kennett (a very popular crossing point for walkers) or from Waden Hill over to West Kennet Long Barrow. The proposals referred to by Nigel in the Avebury Parish Traffic Plan seem to have gone very quiet.

There is also no provision for wheelchairs around the stones and you cross the road between the SW/SE quadrants at your peril. Why on earth can't a pedestrian crossing be installed there?
But as you say, we have discussed this before!

IF (big IF I know) a bypass could be built far enough around Avebury as to not cause any damage then it would be a good thing. How far out that would need to be i don't know?

My only problem with a formal zebra crossing is that you would then have to have those grotesque flashing yellow beacons too (i believe so anyway) and I think Avebury has far to much street furnitures as it is (and it would ruin my photography). Maybe reducing the speed limit to 15 or maybe 10mph between the banks and giving pedestrians priority like they do in some town centres is the way forward. This would help wheel chair access too I would imagine. I also like what they did at the Rollrights for wheeled access so something similar would good.

I wouldn't like to stop vehicles (cars and buses anyway) from going through the village as this would be unfair on the locals trying to go about there business.

To be honest, I have loads of ideas which will never come to fruition. Mostly though, I hope it doesn't get any worse than it already is now.

My view, as I said in an earlier post, is that it can't be done without affecting known and possibly unknown sites and that upgrading the existing routes to Marlborough and Calne would be the less destructive way forward.
If something is discovered during any bypass build, I would imagine the Arch's would have come in get as much data as possible in a limited time then it would be gone forever. I personally wouldn't want to see that happen.

Crossing the A4 has a simple solution, a chair lift from the top of Silbury up to WKLB. I can't see anyone objecting!

Up, or is it down? Isn't Silbury a tad higher than the WKLB :-)

And a helter skelter slide spiralling around the outside? I'd pay to go on that, Heritage England take note.
