Two things Nigel...and meant in a none argumentative manner:-

The 'may or may not' is not good enough, it IS a precise rate of depletion that is required but of course it never will be.

100% accurate of course, but how much of this unknown knowledge would have been gained if not discovered by detectorists in the first instance? A great many 'finds' are discovered in areas totally ignored by archaeologists because the history they do know has ruled those area out.
Yes we are losing a great deal, but at the same time gaining a lot from the good guys that are reporting their finds, so somehow a balance must be found on all sides because it is very unlikely to stop, illegal or not. At the end of the day we have to be realistic I feel.
