Nighthawks make sexy telly but they aren't the real problem. It took a farmer to point out that truth .... https://heritageaction.wordpress.com/2015/10/13/farmer-graham-tells-archaeologist-mark-horton-most-metal-detecting-is-raping-the-ground/

Would this outstanding haul have ever been discovered without them? https://theheritagetrust.wordpress.com/2015/09/29/the-jersey-hoard-update/

Two things Nigel...and meant in a none argumentative manner:- The 'may or may not' is not good enough, it IS a precise rate of depletion that is required but of course it never will be. Secondly and in regard to 'artefacts being needlessly taken and society being wantonly deprived of most of the associated knowledge of its past'. 100% accurate of course, but how much of this unknown knowledge would have been gained if not discovered by detectorists in the first instance? A great many 'finds' are discovered in areas totally ignored by archaeologists because the history they do know has ruled those area out. Yes we are losing a great deal, but at the same time gaining a lot from the good guys that are reporting their finds, so somehow a balance must be found on all sides because it is very unlikely to stop, illegal or not. At the end of the day we have to be realistic I feel.

Howburn Digger wrote: Yes. Good bloke. Stopped digging. Slept in his car for 3 nights to guard it until the archaeologists arrived! But then, so he bloody should have, especially as he's going to get a massive ex gratia reward. And how many other do that rather than crudely dig it all out straight away? Very very few. Here's a solution we proposed years ago .... https://heritageaction.wordpress.com/2014/11/02/is-it-time-to-pay-metal-detectorists-to-behave/
