Definitely well worth a visit. Easy climb if you are relatively fit :)

I'll give it a go next time. How long does it take to get up there at smokers pace? ;)

I think it was less than an hour. It was 8 years ago last time I did it, I was a touch stoned and got lost on the way up, so my timings aren't perfect ;)

An hour sounds good! Do you set off from the pub in the valley, further down from Copt Howe?
I had lunch there once, good place! ;) (The pub, not Copt Howe, although I'm sure lunch there is good too)

Er.... see prev comment for memory issues. Looking at the orange map I think I parked at one of the carparks about NY294064. I went and had a look at Copt Howe before going up the hill.

Ok, cheers. Will check it out.

I assume you are referring to Castlerigg & Long Meg?

If so, you MUST visit Swinside (Sunkenkirk). Thats an order. :)

Did they move Long Meg over the M5 then? ;p

No, I meant Castlerigg and Swinside. Seen 'em both, but will be re-visiting. Heartily agree regarding the esteem in which you hold the latter :)

Yes, Swinside (& Castlerigg for that matter) absolutely fantastic.

Did a revisit of both sites (great light!), and also Druid's Circle and Blakey Raise. Throw in Piel Castle and Furness Abbey for good measure, and I'm a happy camper.

Hi Evergreen,

I reckon it's at least 1 hour 30 minutes to Pike of Stickle summit from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. It's probably the same from the New Dungeon Ghyll. The Old DG is the far better pub by miles. That's beer and atmosphere. The time I quote is for someone regularly used to going on the mountains. Add at least 30 minutes to 1 hour for someone unused to it. It's a steep route. The direct route up the scree from Mickleden is a treadmill of legendary proportions, and although the distance is shorter the effort is increased exponentially, as will be the time taken.

Please be aware that the descent down the scree is discouraged, but if you keep to the sides little damage will be done. It's exceptionally steep, so if you are unsure of how you will feel I advise you to avoid it. The highlight is the man-made cave, and the numerous evidence of stone flakes from preliminary preparation of the stone axes. Not to mention the incredible mountain landscape of the glaciated Langdale valley and surroundint peaks.

There are other minor stone-axe working sites to be seen on the Langdale Pikes that involve less steep settings, and are well documented on TMA.

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy it, and hope you have a safe time. Let us know how you get on. If you need any more info feel free to ask, as I'm very familiar with the area.

All the best,

TE.

Ah, Orkney! I really want to go back. Much preferred it to Lewis, which I'd also like to go back to but not as much.

Been to Harris, Lewis, Skye & Orkney. Would love to get to the small islands next. But would always like to go back and do more of Orkney. Beautiful place. Worth it for Wideford & Cuween by themselves!
Very much liked Banks too (Tomb of the otters)
Had a fantastic time.
