I've been to Egypt, seen the pyramids and many other marvels there but have never considered them built by aliens! On saying that I found it very hard to believe that the ditch around the unfinished obelisk was formed by the use of sticks being drilled into the rock as we were told by our guide and to which one tourists replied to as 'bollocks'! The smooth sides to the top surface and the sides of the pillar which were worked on would have removed the semi-circular part of the drill holes left behind, but why were there none showing on the other side of the trench which wasn't worked on was the question I asked to which there was no reply as we were rapidly moved on!!
I'll only go as far as to say that in my opinion there is not much you can't do by putting the time and effort in, but I do wonder if the ancients had another method of working with stone that we know nothing of without bringing aliens into the argument.

One of the first posts you ever made on TMA, Mr S, was about South American stonework/cutting – truly impressive stuff! I can’t find the thread, or the link you posted but, among other things, the ‘dissolving’ of stone using bird spittle was mentioned.
See if I can find the thread later but meanwhile this might be of interest.

Yes you're right LS I did and there was mention of bird spittle. Yuk!

Ah, a circle of holes, I misunderstood, sorry. Although, should there be individual holes at the bottom, and would a round chisel work just as well?
Incidentally, I have a flint "drill" I picked up near Avebury that makes a deep, perfectly round hole in my apple tree and no doubt would do the same in limestone as well.

Well presumably the circular drill marks on the bottom would have been polished out. Actually the principal is exactly the same as I would do being a carpenter if I didn't have the use of a router. I would draw a circle with a compass and use a depth checked drill along it then with a chisel level off the bottom. Easy peasy in timber of course with decent tools.
What sort of diameter if your flint drill Nige? The claim in Egypt was that they used timber sticks (like a dowel) and put a mix of sand and water down to grind a hole through the granite. Can you imagine how long that would take to drill down 4ft and remove a 3ft wide trench all around the obelisk to move around in!! Got to be another way surely!!
