The requirement to sustain the soil would be an integral cultural norm in a healthy society, by 'common sense'.

Well those who planted landscapes round stately homes with no hope of seeing them at their best had a certain noble quality about them that most of us don't.

And good for the mid-Victorians that planted Giant Redwoods in UK. Trouble is, none of them date from before about 1860 I think so we have yet to see them at their full height. It'll be a while....

Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that ! Interesting pollen samples, though, allegedly entrapped in the cloth.

Have they only just discovered that then SG? The amount of times it's been studied I would have thought that would have come to light years ago and sorted!

NB. And while the pope goes here and there, 'blessing' all around, it might be worth mentioning that the word 'blessing' derives from the Old English bloedsian meaning to mark or sprinkle with blood.

Not far beneath the glittering surfaces and crispy ceremonies there lies still a deeper pagan past - which so 'Oft with the blood of beasts was it red...'

Christians or Pagans, folk are as daft as they ever were. Did you notice the Queen had a tall hat so that the Church of Rome wasn't towering over the Church of England?!

Yes, though the pope's hat thingy disappeared for a while and I was afraid it might have fallen foul to a sort of Scottish kamikaze (god wind : -) The lack of a red carpet was an intentional slap on his red shoes (though they put that down to the wind as well) and while he presented comrade Elizabeth with an 8th century copy of the gospels we gave him a little facsimile of something or other. Nah... that wasn't really a slight, just a gentle reminder of who's boss over here.

Has he been arrested yet by the way?

No. Three kids gave the Queen flowers, three gave him flowers. Hers were all given by boys, his were all given by girls. The word Bugger could be heard coming from five hundred photographers.

Well, apparently, I* am going to give to him a replica of a magnificent cross from the Staffordshire Hoard.

*That's me and a million others.

Global warming really has not sunk in to people's minds, in any way, shape or form. An oak tree planted now will - hypothetically - mature when the climate is altered and will actually suit a baobob or a desert thorn. Capability Broon's skills are now lost forever - despite the TV hype.

Well, Ok then:- "Max Frei, a Swiss police criminologist who initially obtained pollen from the shroud during the STURP investigation stated that of the 58 different types of pollens found, 45 were from the Jerusalem area, while 6 were from the eastern Middle East, with one pollen species growing exclusively in Constantinople, and two found in Edessa, Turkey". Quoted from nickipaedia.

Even if they weren't, our system is now too geared to short term gain for that sort of project. Still, there are one or two places where socialist and long-term thinking hasn't been crushed by bankers- the National Forest in the Midlands is coming along quietly - a third of 200 square miles will be forested eventually. Midlanders will have calmer natures.
