Hi everyone

Sorry I have been sent the link to the thread and thought I'd better come on and say something.

Firstly, I am the organiser of the Wiccan Ritual at Avebury that was mentioned above that Terry was 'unhappy' with. Just to say, ignore him, he has no authority at Avebury other than that which people give him. The incident sadly does give a bad impression to the tourists, however, if it continues, then the only person who appears foolish is obvious.

Secondly, I am on the Sacred Sites Forum Committee, and the rule of 'only attending a Druid ritual' is complete....bovine excrement. There is no such rule, there is no such request from the NT or anyone in authority. As someone has pointed out, there are many organised rituals going on, and many people who wish to attend to celebrate in their own way.

The campsite is for everyone, and the only requests anyone makes, is that the users of the campsite act in a responsible manner. That is noise levels are curbed after 1am, and that you keep the site clean and take your rubbish home with you.

Apart from that...come along and enjoy yourselves.

If anyone has any other questions on this matter, please feel free to post them on here and I will be only too happy to clarify the situation. I am going to a meeting about Lammas on Wednesday 8th July, so am quite happy to take questions with me if anyone has them.

BB

Thanks for that.
Could i ask, have the NT told you this "rule" is nonsense as they don't seem to be able to find time to reply to my e-mails regarding this matter.

I sit on the committee that arranges the camping and as one of the Pagan representatives that ensures that 'our' needs and wishes are voiced, there has been no such rule put in. I cannot say it any clearer, where ever this has come from it isn't from any of the organisers (formally) that negotiate and arrange the facilities for the campers. The committee includes the NT, the local and parish council, the police, EH, the local vicar, Terry Dobney, Piers, Nick and myself to represent the Pagan community and a member of the local residents association.

Just to clarify the situation, I will raise this on Wednesday and get it formally noted in the minutes, and come back to you with the response.

Thanks Sian.
I apologise if i overreacted to Chances post and caused any offence, it was done with fairness to all in mind.
It seems like power hungry individuals are just stirring things up once again, i hope you do raise this matter at the meeting and the one responsible is taken to task about it.
Thanks again.

I don't know you Sian, though I do know Avebury quite well. May I just say how dignified your posts on this matter have been.

Because the Megameet picnic has been arranged for August 1st when the Lammas celebrations take place (also a Saturday) it was inevitable that there would be a meeting of interests - or perhaps even a collision. The pagan ceremonies do tend to dominate the SE quadrant of Avebury Henge while they are taking place. I personally would choose to avoid Avebury at this time as I prefer to tread quietly around Avebury and go there at quieter times.

As it happens I have prior commitments on that day so won't be able to take up the invitation to join in any of the activities.
I wish you all a sunny day and a harmonious time - if BB stands for 'bright blessings' then I return them.

Peace - and a good harvest to the farmers of Wiltshire!

Aaaaaaanyway... As I was saying...

For those of us who merely enjoy being in the company of like-minded people with an interest in ancient sites, whatever your angle...

*BUMP!*

See you there on 1st August!

I look forward to seeing old friends, meeting new ones, chatting about stones and god knows what else(!), drinking, eating, walking, exploring, and just generally enjoying...

Aye, well said Goff. No manufactured collision of interests or re-run of the famous Cheltenham WI/Mother's Union riots of '86 where pugnacious mobs met within 50 yards of each other, just two lots of people having a nice time as usual with no-one generating any ill feelings from the sidelines. Jeez!

I will give my thanks as well..

It's good to know that there are People out there that are prepared to put themselves out to inform us of the truth of the mater..

Important, that Folk traveling to Avebury on this date know they can camp if they wish and that there are other activities going on..

Don't worry, I'm sure the individual that started this rediculous rumour, will feel rather silly over the whole affair. :)

Hear hear twice!

The idea for the first Megameet was mooted on the Stones Mailing List about four years ago. The idea behind it was for people who were interested in megaliths to meet up somewhere convenient (somewhere that had a few facilities and a place to go if the weather was poor) and Avebury was the logical place. This year's Megameet was intentionally fixed to coincide with Lammas as we thought it a good idea to be there at the same time as other groups and people, whatever their beliefs or interests, in a shared spirit of respect for one of our most impressive ancient sites.

This made me smile, thank you Nigel - you may be surprised to hear this is the first I have heard of the Cheltenham WI/Mother's Union riots of '86 (were you there).

I wondered if you made this point in response to my earlier post.

quote:
Because the Megameet picnic has been arranged for August 1st when the Lammas celebrations take place (also a Saturday) it was inevitable that there would be a meeting of interests - or perhaps even a collision. endquote:

I agree the point I was making was slightly ambiguous as I was mainly referring to the different pagan groups that gather from around mid-day onwards, especially outside the Red Lion. We already know that druid and wiccan circles are meeting, and I think more than one druid circle meet there. The worst scenario is that you may have to wait longer to be served in the pub.

As I said in my previous post, peace - and wishing all an enjoyable day.
