Possibly hence the tradition (largely extinct) of blacking up.... I saw these guys in Chorley a year or so ago, good they were too. http://www.stonethecrows.org.uk/ http://www.howlingdog.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/crows/crows_why_we_black_up.htm

Excellent! I'd LOVE to see that! Mamuthones... Sounds like summat out of Doctor Who (no disrespect, of course!) and looks REALLY eerie! Those masks are SO cool! Good find, SM - I remember you talking about it and being met with blank expressions all round... Myself included! G x

Looks ace doesn't it? Reading around a bit on the internet, other than vague references to the tradition dating 'back into prehistory', the 'sensible' theory seems to be that it represents the defeat of the saracens by the native sardinians, but there seem to be other references to it being an agricultural feritilty thang etc... The other guys, the Issohadores, don't look anywhere near as cool...

The issahodores probably represent the generals with the 'bear men' the warriors.
