Wired to the moon?
Mar 08, 2002, 13:07
I visited Glenhead (a row of 3 stones) near Dunblane yesterday.

(hope the link works)
I checked out the Stones of wonder website (see links) and they were saying that it may have been aligned to winter moonrises and moonsets.
The area to the immediate east of the monument is called 'Moon Plantation', with a 'Moon Cottage' and a wood called 'Moon Strip' (which follows the same alignment as the stone row).
Last night I was posting the photos I took, and it occured to me that the cup marks on the top of the middle stone (see photo) looked like moon craters. I wonder now if they were originally inspired in this way and are in fact dedicated to the moon.
The standing stone a few hundred yards to the north of the row also has weathered cup markings, has a pale gray quartz surface which gives it a lunar surface appearance.

Has anyone any thought on this?

Is I barking up the wrong moon?
