I agree about making mistakes but also remember the quote "to err is human, to forgive divine". And it's true about many archaeologists not having the slightest inkling of fieldcraft. But the judgement that a person makes about a stone is entirely subjective - never mind how it's wrapped up - based on all the stones that they have 'handled' in the past. And my judgement must be pretty sharp simply because I've handled so many thousand tonnes of stones.
