Yup, turned out to be the 1845 engraving by Charles Knight.* Quite nicely hand-coloured though so have put it up Meg Poems.**

Attended a very interesting talk on saturday night given by lady called Dr Annie Anderson, who I believe teaches at Southampton Uni. It was on art and ancient landscapes and did the full spectrum from gothic ruins to dolmens and circles. Lots of stuff by Piper and Samuel Palmer and also a lot of Paul Nash...that I don't like!

A man called Thomas Hearne was mentioned who did I think it was said a whole series of Stonehenge images back in the late 1700s.

Also mentioned were the Ruralists who are still busy painting the landscape etc down here in Cornwall.

As i sat being bombarded by images I thought a lot of Jane's work, it would have fitted in very well.

It was also mentioned that Southampton Uni will be putting on an exibition of all this work in early 2008..keep an eye out Goff! and that it might tour the country.

Did you mean the Brotherhood of Ruralists Mr.H... http://ruralistfineart.co.uk/pages/artists/AnnArnold.html
they don't seem to have done any stones, but the trees of the Annie Ovendon and Ann Arnold are rather good, prints though are expensive, did an exhibition at Devizes Museum not so long ago..

Hi Moss

yes, that's the group...Grahame and Annie Ovendon are based down here on Bodmin Moor....I think they have incorporated stones in some of their Art...perhaps not on line....

I am a fan..nice and bright.....and you don't have to be told what it is!

It sounds like a wonderful lecture, I wish I could have been there and I'm honored to be in such esteemed company in your mind; with one caveat - that I hope you *do* like my work, Mr H!

I'm painting lots of pebbles at the moment (http://www.janetomlinson.com/images/paintings/justapileofstones.jpg for example) rather than specific megalithic sites. Needless to say each pebble has its own story.

Go on, tell me what it is about Paul Nash's work that you don't like. Much of it is nice and bright and you can see what it is. Plus he gets in a non-sentimental version of the atmosphere of the landscape. Go on. I'm not saying you should like it.

Wow - like the pebbles. Reminded me right away of a painting by Mu Ch'i of Six Persimmons* - one of my all time favourite paintings :-)
