You're kidding! They don't let such minor considerations put them off. You can often see cars parked in hedgerows around Glastonbury Tor!
Actually, it's amazing how often you'll see people pull up at the top of the road, wind the window down, point their cheapo digital camera at the tor and then drive straight off again. Pathetic.

Do you suppose people were moaning about the same things thousands of years ago? "There are too many bloody daytrippers... People not respecting the stones... Roast venison stall stinking the place out..." It's such a big area, could it really have been kept free of people who weren't priestly types and taking the rituals seriously?
Just being flippant. Can't possibly know what went on in people's heads at the time. Which is probably why (whether I like it or not) anyone's take on / use of the site today is fair enough (bar vandalism) - without being all postmodernist about it and still being able to laugh at people wearing sheets.

Strange to think that there were possibly only 20,000 people within the british isles when Avebury was concieved..AND that it was probably built by teenagers as the life expectency was so low.....There is 4 times that number of people in my town alone now !!! And what do teenagers do today thats constructive ??????? FECK all that compares

I was building dens, trying to ignore girls and failing, and farting around in woods making rope swings. I did invent a scaled down sodium chlorate/sugar-powered rocket-engined catamaran that did 20 yds of noisy progress along the canal before sinking to a fiery bubbling grave.
