Wow..that was a poetic experience first thing in the morning - it definitely eclipsed the whining drone of miserable news. In fact Thom's poem would sound pretty good as well - the spoken word presents far stronger imagery than the written..

Rosser Reeves: E=MC2
Sep 29, 2005, 11:55
On the subject of mighty works fading with time, an expression of it even neater than Ozymandias -
(Not sure who wrote it)

The sword of Charlemagne
of the mighty thrust,
Is now ferrous oxide,
known as rust.

....or, for the absolute ultimate on that theme:

E=MC2 by Rosser Reeves

Some day, perhaps, some alien eye or eyes,
Blood red in cold and polished horny lids,
Set in a chitinous face
Will sweep the arch of some dark, distant sky
And see a nova flare,
A flick of light, no more.
A pinpoint on a photographic plate,
A foot-note in an alien chart of stars
Forgotten soon on miles of dusty shelves
Where alien beetles feed.
A meal for worms,
Sole epitaph
To mark the curious end of restless man,
Who for a second of galactic time
Floated upon a speck of cosmic dust
Around a minor sun.

Nice one Nigel; slightly reminiscent of -

Such a tiny sentiment.
Such a silent drop of time
in this Valley of Such Antiquity...

See above under Valley of Dreams or at http://megalithicpoems.blogspot.com/ (where an illustrated MP seed now grows :-)

Blast!
a. Because the Valley of Dreams one filled me up, and b. because I've been thinking there's a gap in the market for a website of megalithic pictures with dreamy words for ages and never got round to it... Never mind, I'll enjoy yours developing (gritted teeth) ;)

Stop gritting your teeth Nigel :-) I see the blogspot as a (very) simple test run for a book on Megalithic Poems - a book that will have be a collaborative project; there's just so much stuff out there but it's scattered about and it'll need the eyes and ears of everyone with a dual interest in megaliths and poetry (and illustrations to go with them) if it's ever going to happen. A book's also about checking for accuracy, background, permission to use text and illustrations etc., and that too is going to take time and a collaborative effort. AndyN and PeterH have expressed an interest to be in on the project and you too are very welcome to join the team if you want. The blog at http://megalithicpoems.blogspot.com/ is more a personal 'sketchbook' at present to see how poems work with illustrations (and they do seem to work quite well) but I'm hoping that along with comments and suggestions both here, on the blog and elsewhere, some idea of how the book should eventually look will emerge.

I'd just like to add that if Megalithic Poems ever does materialize as a book it'd be good to see (any) profits from it going towards a worthy megalithic cause (Silbury, Thornborough etc) though I reckon publication's a couple of years away at least. Meanwhile, I was going to ask you, AndyN, PeterH and others if I could post some of your poems/illustrations on the blog and if you have any preferences/ideas for words or illustrations to accompany them.

Many congrats on the blog, Littlestone - it really is most attractive and the chosen illustrations work beautifully. You are certainly welcome to include my "Are the stones ever silent now?" although I don't have a suitable illustration to hand.

Thanks Peter - will post your beautiful Are the stones ever silent now? next; are you sure you don't have an illustration to go with it?

What a great project! I'll do what little I can to lend a hand.

"and if you have any preferences/ideas for words or illustrations to accompany them"
I have some notions, I'll send you some I made earlier.... Words 'n pictures... you've obviously gone along the same route as me - I think there's a whole new art form waiting to be explored.

I always imagined the ideal would be a massive £200 coffee table book, but I guess no publisher is going to be convinced about that!
