Welcome aboard Nigel. Suggest we continue to post Megalithic Poems here and on the Stones List, and use the blog to illustrate them with suitable pictures.

More from Blake about Stonehenge and it's builders in Jerusalem` (chapter 3) : "They become like they behold! Yet immense in strength and power, In awful pomp and gold, in all the precious unhewn stones of Eden They build a stupendous Building on the Plain of Salisbury, with chains Of rocks round London Stone, of Reasonings, of unhewn Demonstrations In labyrinthine arches (Mighty Urizen the Architect) thro' which The heavens might revolve and Eternity be bound in their chain. Labour unparallell'd! a wondrous rocky World of cruel destiny, Rocks piled on rocks reaching the stars, stretching from pole to pole. The Building is Natural Religion & its Altars Natural Morality, A building of eternal death, whose proportions are eternal despair."

And from Thomas Wharton, who clearly didn't know what the hell to make of Stonehenge... "Thou noblest monument of Albion's isle, Whether by Merlin's aid, from Scythia's shore To Amber's fatal plain, Pendragon bore, Huge frame of giant hands the mighty pile, T'entomb his Britons, slain by Hengist's guile: Or Druid priests, sprinkled with human gore, Taught 'mid thy massy maze their mystic lore: Or Danish chiefs, enrich'd with savage spoil, To Victory's idol vast, an unhewn shrine Rear'd the rude heap; or, in thy hallow'd round Repose the kings of Brutus' genuine line; Or here those kings in solemn state were crown'd: Studious to trace thy pond'rous origin, We muse on many an ancient tale renown'd."
