And for your further use, there's a decent sized picture of Thom's survey halfway down this page.... http://www.megalithicsites.co.uk/math8.html
and plans of someone checking his work here http://www.jsdesign.co.uk/avebury/

BTW Pete, should I mention the Z feature also points right at Silbaby, or is that just chance? ;)

Thanks - the second image is particularly close. I'm surprised nobody has spotted the lozenge rebate in the two big stones. From this view the tops of the z-stones seem 'just right' supporting the view that they were correctly re-erected by Keiller. Looking down the line of stones, in the winter picture, and going up to the horizon there is what seems to be a slight notch. It could be an .jpg artefact.

At some Northumberland sites it would seem that making the horizon notches must have taken more effort than making the monument itself.

I might have to take issue with that at some point...

Alignment Exercise

Get a map of Avebury and the surrounding area.
Draw a line from any significant point in Avebury.
The Cove, Obelisk etc and draw a line outwards in any direction.
How far before you hit a monument?
The longest line without hitting anything wins a real Prize!

(at the horizon here). http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/10097

There's two notches on the horizon (azimuth not measured) here and that ridge is the Great Whin Sill - a type of granitic 'tough rock'. There's no glacial or other explanation for the dells other than that they are 'man-made' so I conclude that making these horizon notches took a gretaer effort than the little circle itself.

'A picture is worth more than a thousand words'. http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/33226

It's here, it's your's, I've altered it. I've used images of a full solar disk to illustrate what happens with a partial lunar disk. I'm an artist - I have a license. I'm surprised I'm the first to recognise the 'lozenge' shape made between the two big stones.

As the sun gets very near to this azimuth around the solstice sunrises it should be possible to find one sunny morning out of the half dozen or so available to catch an image of this primary 'alignment' (and to welcome the sun into the circle).

I've put a note on my desk calendar to delete this image on Wednesday. The pictures of the sun were taken from an excellent website all about this stuff.
