By figurative I meant representative of something rather than abstract.

Yes, the vast majority of C&R marks are on horizontal surfaces, but I know of plenty of examples of them on vertical surfaces too. I think the general interpretation is that horizontal = female, vertical = male.

The Galician stuff is generally on horizontal surfaces.
