Diana Ross' voice used to really underwhelm me and i thought it wet and weedy (I once described her perfoamnce on Motown singles as being 'like a wet tissue breaking over a runaway train'). But in recent years I've come around to it. And the way she sings on I'm Gonna Make You Love Me is a massive overwhelmer. The way she delivers 'I'm gonna use every trick in the book'; every fuckin time mate, every fuckin time.

"You're The One" - JR & The Mdern Lovers. 'If you didn't want me to want you this way Shoulda never come see my rock 'n' roll band play' and "I Know It's True But I'm Sorry To Say" - Violent Femmes. Starts heartbreaking. But when it get's to: 'My body has been punished Lor I think I've had enough My body has been punished with too much and not enough' I die again.

waaaaay too many to mention, but right now anything by Stina Nordenstam or Tim Buckley's "Song To The Siren" will do the overwhelming thang.

China Doll by the Grateful Dead (especially acoustic versions from the Warfield Theatre run in 1980)

Hey Grufty, You got the Stina Nordenstam "Photographer's Wife" EP? Don't think it's on any of her albums. Lead track is "I could still (be an actor)"

Loads and loads and loads. I'm a sentimental sop at heart. The one that never fails though is.... Gorecki by Lamb Moey <hairs on back of neck prickling just thinking about it>
