Space-rock/psych-punk bands from the UK festival/squat scene
Jul 27, 2011, 20:10
Hello all, I've been trawling several forums with this same request; I'm looking for recommendations of bands that play a particular style of guitar-based Psych/Space-Rock. Essentially, it seems to have been a UK thing, formed in the free festival and squat party scenes of the 80s and 90s, inspired by bands like Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind. The main characteristics are heavy use of guitar delay, often with a wah to give a trancey filter sweep. Drums are usually danceable, often tribal. Elements of dub, punk, funk, or folk can be present.

My main references for this sort of music are the Whitstable band Crow, and Moondragon from Cornwall. These were both fairly punk-orientated examples, though I'm also interested in less punky examples.

Other bands in roughly the same style:

Here & Now
Sons Of Selina
Ship Of Fools
Porcupine Tree (early)

Other bands with a vague similarity:

The Is (spacey reggae)
AOS3 (dub-punk with spacey moments)

Also of some relevance are Crow's previous band Door Marked Summer:

And their later incarnation Nine:

So, over to you guys; give me your obscure crusty/tribal/space/psych/dub/punk recommendations!
