Hello all, I've been trawling several forums with this same request; I'm looking for recommendations of bands that play a particular style of guitar-based Psych/Space-Rock. Essentially, it seems to have been a UK thing, formed in the free festival and squat party scenes of the 80s and 90s, inspired by bands like Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind. The main characteristics are heavy use of guitar delay, often with a wah to give a trancey filter sweep. Drums are usually danceable, often tribal. Elements of dub, punk, funk, or folk can be present. My main references for this sort of music are the Whitstable band Crow, and Moondragon from Cornwall. These were both fairly punk-orientated examples, though I'm also interested in less punky examples. Crow http://www.myspace.com/crowwhitstable ("Poppy Fields" is the clearest example) http://www.mrgig.com/crow Moondragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92zAMHUldZM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CB-zoxepfs Paperhouse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ2XuWD4y5Q Dead Flowers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b7wST8ZI0s Mandragora http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv-U77jgzTM Omnia Opera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGpaCS8POmM Iowaska http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofGgBodnZLQ Other bands in roughly the same style: Here & Now Sons Of Selina Ship Of Fools Porcupine Tree (early) Other bands with a vague similarity: The Is (spacey reggae) AOS3 (dub-punk with spacey moments) Also of some relevance are Crow's previous band Door Marked Summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RibMzb7MOHk And their later incarnation Nine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRYFQ4TK0FI So, over to you guys; give me your obscure crusty/tribal/space/psych/dub/punk recommendations! |

Thanks. I hadn't heard of Inner City Unit, which is strange considering the Hawkwind connection. The clips I've just heard were quite interesting, I'll look into them more closely. The other bands you mention I already know (I mentioned Ozrics in my post) apart from the last name. EDIT: Oh, Gay Bikers On Acid, yes I have! Keep 'em coming!

You have taste mate - AOS3!!!! Their first album is still a total fuckin' stone cold classic! I'll chip in with The Other Window, who're great. I started a thread here: http://www.headheritage.co.uk/headtohead/unsung/topic/60595/flat/ If you find their first album please let me know.

I have to confess I only discovered AOS3 the other week, so I'm still new to them. Great stuff though. Another band in the same ballpark was Culture Shock, though they were more straightforward ska/punk. I'll look into The Other Window (pun intended!), thanks!

Loads of good stuff here, The Ullulators, Magic Mushroom Band, Mandragora, Thunderdogs. Demi Monde, the label set up by Dave Anderson, released some albums by bands on the scene. http://devotionalhooligan.blogspot.com

Let me know if you want a burn or an upload but IIRC Iron Man records in Birmingham was knocking out the CD for a few squid a few years back. I first bought it BITD on vinyl from the old Spillers in Cardiff - you know how some albums just leap out at you and say "buy me"?. Anyway, AOS3 reformed a couple of years ago but some members also formed P.A.I.N. in the interim (see the above link for details) who I also recommend if you're getting your crust on but they're neither space-rock or psych. But do check em out. Aah.. upon checking it seems very OOP indeed. I wrote a review for UKRG aaages ago but the link is dead so you can download it guilt-free from here. Happy skanking.

I saw the Magic Mushroom Bands a few times. Some others worthy of consideration might be Webcore, Citizen Fish (another Subhumans project) ... Err, if I remember hen I get home will have a look to refresh my memory. Renegade Soundwave maybe?
