IMHO, Loop is infinitely better than Spacemen 3, beyond any comparison, indeed.

Just feels like apples and oranges to me. S3 had songs, Loop had a sound. Loop's sound evolved with each album, but the albums themselves sometimes sounded samey. In S3's case I sometimes think that if there were more bands in their time doing what they did with better equipment and musicianship, S3 would not have left the same footprint. Though I liked them both in their time for different reasons...and still love that Transparent Radiation cover.

Already stated my opinion on this, except for the fact that I noted history is repeating itself. Wooden Shjips are currently denying all knowledge of Loop! When I met Ripley he said that lots of people had mentioned them to him but that he hadn't got around to checking out their music yet ... hmmmm! Now ... Spectrum vs Spiritualized, anyone?

In general I tend to agree that Spacemen 3 were first at the drone repetition thing. And also that their catalogue is more varied. But by the time Loop appeared proper, Spacemen were in other pastures and Loop had mastered the repetition/drone/kraut thing to an extent that Spacemen never even tried. And with a bit of a dystopian/industrial atmosphere that Spacemen never thought about. It probaly came from Robert Hampson participation in the mighty Godflesh. And that only stands them apart way too much. All Sonic's tantrums are just that, tantrums. Even if Loop decided to follow Spacemen 3 steps, the level of geniousness they reached in the end allows for some kind of initial similarities. Also I'm dumbstruck to find that nobody mentions "wolf Flow" the record with the Peel Sessions on it, that by far is the best testament of the power of Loop. That record is unbeatable. So both great, comparisons are useless. Myself I find me listening to Loop more, just because I like the dry atmospheric heaviness of it.

I had Wolf Flow on this morning - ideal to dance around to with a toddler. I've rediscovered both bands in the last couple of years, and also Sonic's solo work which I found pedestrian first time round. His All Things Being Equal this year is good and also accessible - only one moment of obvious Suicide derivation.

That record is unbeatable. I absolutely agree. Fine as all of Loop's studio albums were, they thrived in a live context, and 'Wolf/Flow' captures that to near perfection. Bugger it, I'm going to play it right now!

I still prefer the Peel session version of 'Straight To Your Heart' that's on Wolf Flow. It was first broadcast on 19th Aug 1987, which explains the memory of getting home late from work (shift work at the time) and alighting from a very humid and sticky bus, and just standing there listening on my (flash fer me) Aiwa radio/walkman and being blown away. Spent years at record fairs looking fer a bootleg copy before Wolf Flow was finally released. Also got a soft spot for the early singles comp, The World In Your Eyes.

I think it was the album version I heard first (or possibly it was live), but yes, Straight To Your Heart... a definite "oh wow" moment, particularly coming from a British band in 1987.

I wholly concur. ‘Straight To Your Heart’ is Loop’s greatest ever track, especially in the Peel session version. Some years later I played it to a No Doubt-loving girlfriend who immediately went out and bought it. Alas, we parted company soon after that so I’ve no idea if she’s still into them or Gwen Stefani!
