Good call on Tony Bourge (classic early Budgie LP's, for those who don't recognize the name.) No mentions for MIZUTANI, ACHIM REICHEL or GUNTHER SCHICKERT yet? Don't forget the non-English speaking world! And JOHN ABERCROMBIE -- who mostly does wretched fusion, but he played wanky acid guitar all over THE STARK REALITY record, which equals instant ultracool! Also on the jazz tip -- SONNY SHARROCK!!! Every noise-loving hipster should know his name. For that matter CHARLIE CHRISTIAN pretty much invented electric guitar playing (the Hendrix of the great depression), and he's not exactly a household name.

Agreed on Tony Bourge - very, very unsung. And kudos to the person who mentioned Phil 'Snakefinger' Lithman - quite possibly the most unique stylist I've ever heard. NOBODY ever sounded like him. Link Wray, anyone ?

cHARLIE wrote: Will Sergeant ! Love his playing! (((charrr))) Spot on! One of my all-time faves. Not a flashy soloist but neither was Johnny Marr (has he been mentioned)? Dunno if these have been mentioned anywhere (it's a long thread): Larry Wallis/Paul Rudolph Huw Lloyd-Langton Thurston Moore/Lee Renaldo Steffi (Here and Now) Mauel Gottsching One could go on

David Lindley always seen more of a jokester hiding some serious chops and taste. Kaleidoscope and solo and Jackson Browne work. Pappo (Norbeto Napolitano) of Pappo's Blues easily on par with Clapton, Green, Page, and Gallagher. Great blues based hardrock guitarist.

Of course Link Wray! Though perhaps even more underrated is DICK DALE "king of the surf guitar" -- he is left handed and played with extreme volume effects since practically the 1950's -- therefore a key influence on Jimi Hendrix!

Ooo, where to start ? The 70's and P-Funk's a good a place as any, Eddie Hazel gets all the kudos but Gary Shider and Glen Goins ( superb singer too ) deserve to be much better known. Richard Lloyd - Takes an undeserved backseat to Verlaine when Television get mentioned. Steffe Sharpstrings - Like Steve Hillage but even more ecstatic. Keith Levene - Things were never the same after i saw him on the OGWT ! Charlie Whitney - Seemingly almost forgotten Family man. Zal Cleminson - Great playing in a multitude of styles on the SAHB LP's. Michael Rother - No flash solos, just improvised taste and economy. John Martyn - Primarily known as a singer / songwriter but his guitar playing is equally astonishing. The next two aren't underrated as such, they just deserve to be much better known.... Richard Quine - Voidoids / Lou Reed guitarist par excellence. Pete Cosey - Unfortunately not many recordings of this genius exist, 75% of the ones i'm lucky enough to have were recorded on one day ( Feb1st 1975 ) with Miles Davis . Talk about leaving you wanting more ! That's just the tip of the iceberg.... ah, Deke Leonard should be on the list too !
