In EH's defence ... there will be little new stuff to talk about, most of the work having been documented in 69.

It was?? Any references? It was my understanding that the main problem (other than shoddy workmanship in the backfill) was the almost total lack of published findings from the Atkinson dig.

Have I had that wrong all this time?

What I meant is that the tunnel was recorded, and so nothing is really unexpected. The artifacts, well, that's another story...

Another 2 page article - A half page of text with the same diagram *again*, and the other with a couple of poor photos.

These have firstly collapsed into the Merewether tunnel and the
‘man-hole’ and then spilled down into the Atkinson tunnel after the removal of the roadstone.

So, am I reading this right? They're taking out the old infill (roadstone), and the hill is collapsing in on top of them as they're pulling it out?

Sounds very dangerous to me! How do they intend filling the obvious voids that will be left over their heads when the time comes to fill?

Are there any obvious external signs of further collapse on the surface since they've started tunnellling? Or is it all covered up by the monorail and associated works?

2 pages a week really isn't sufficient at this stage for those of us that can't get down there to the visitor centre to see for ourselves what's going on!

I know you shouldn't anthropomorphise inanimate objects (they don't like it when you do that), but I wouldn't mind betting that the Hill is suffering at the moment...

No criticism of you personally but some of us can't help wondering what these 'technical difficulties' are. Technical difficulties at Silbury or technical difficulties with English Heritage's website? If it's the latter that really is very, very unprofessional. Don't English Heritage have people onboard able to set up and run what is, after all, a pretty basic website?

I believe the issue is simply that they are having to use Skanska's satellite internet access to do the updates. The updates are being written by the EH crew who are all living either on site or are put up in accommodation nearby, so they're somewhat "unwired". To reiterate, I am not in any way affiliated with the project - I just have friends who are, so I'm only going on what they've told me.

OK, and to reply to myself, I see that it's up now. As I said - regarding the criticisms of the updates themselves - they do plan to make future updates more detailed. I guess we'll have to see next week.

Looks like it oc.

Getting bad vibes about this (lack of info, 'technical diffculties', nothing from the 'experts' etc). Time to get the media involved methinks. If we can't get accurate and up-to-date information via the EH website (even though we've been demanding it for weeks) looks like it's time to notify the press, radio, TV and any other relevant bodies that something's not right in the State of Silbury.

"I know you shouldn't anthropomorphise inanimate objects (they don't like it when you do that), but I wouldn't mind betting that the Hill is suffering at the moment..."

Yes, suffering indeed. It's a tragedy wrapped in a disaster and served on a plate of incompetence.

Hi,
I'm new here. I'm not with EH or any other way involved in the project, but I do know some people and have it on good authority that this is *not* the end of the updates - it really is technical difficulties. They will have it up within the next day or so, and updates after that should be more regular. They've also taken on board the criticisms, and apparently future updates will be more detailed with more pictures and so forth. I don't know about the Ask The Experts thing, but I'll...ahem...ask.

Hi Matt,

Welcome to TMA. Fill yer boots, pal! Any info you can get will be welcome. As you can see, this subject matters to a lot of us, and our frustration is directly attributable to the lack of transparency and clarity from EH, and their seeming indifference to the whole time capsule nonsense. We'd love for someone from officialdom to raise their head above the parapet and sign in on here.

Peace

Yeah, I can see that it's frustrating. Perhaps it would help if I clarified some of the setup they have there to the best of my knowledge. Once again, my usual caveats apply - don't take anything I'm saying as anything other than hearsay. The time capsule thing is obviously a policy thing, which I'd assume would be decided from on high somewhere, so I know nothing about that. The updates are however written by those "on the ground" (or should that be "in the ground"?) - i.e. in a muddy field. I'm sure that they'd love to come here and participate, but they have no internet access in the places they're staying, and on site there's just Skanska's connection. I believe the way the updates are done is that they're written on site, then emailed to someone who puts them on the site.

I realise that it's not practical for everyone, but it is worthwhile heading down there to take a look and visit the visitor information point. They have real, live archaeologists there who can answer questions, as well as finds and photos and geophys stuff. Also the amusing DVD. I was there on Saturday, and despite the rain it was a good trip. They also have a portaloo that's as big as the visitor centre, which for some reason I found particularly amusing.

Thanks again, Matt. I'm a bit too far away for a visit at the mo, so I tend to rely on EH's mastery of Information Technology (which seems to have been a hastily concocted work-in-progress rather than a worked-up infrastructure event). They have had seven years to get this together. Wireless internet anyone? If they have real live archaeo's who can answer questions, how can they not put up the answers on their website? Just this one aspect would go a long way to ameliorate angst and other bad feelings on here and other fora in regard of secrecy and openess; it is OUR Hill, after all, and there seems to be an element of control over information dissemination.... anyway, Matt; thanks for all you have posted here.

Peace
