The Greyweathers
Jul 18, 2001, 17:28
Well, don't know why I'm posting this, but last year at this time a friend and I spent a week traipsing about Dartmoor National Park with an OS map, and a compass.

Man, on one day we found the Greyweathers (which has to be one of the coolest spots going in terms of atmosphere), and we pitched our tent right in the middle of the eastern circle.

There were hardly any clouds around that night, the moon and stars were out in full.

Wow, it had to be one of the better nights of my life for sure.

Highly recommended as a place to lay your head for an evening. I had excellent dreams as well!

Sorry, my self-indulgent tale is over, and we now return you to your regularly scheduled programme.

take care,

scott

Hey great story Scott, here's one from another;

I was with some friends in Dartmoor (my favourite place in the world as it happens) many years ago, a village called Buckland in the Moor, surrounded by the most beautiful wooded combes and blue skies. I went trotting on ahead down the lane (all the woods were closed off unless you were a 'permit' holder??!!??which freaked me out more than a little), and as I rounded a bend and looked down towards the river, I saw a fleeting glimpse of a woman, all in white, she seemed to be beckoning. I still don't know if I imagined it or not. Later that day spent time with the coolest guy there discussing the book he had written and had published regarding Yew Trees, andd their sacred mythology/symbolism. Dartmoor, there is more there than are dreamed of in all of our philosophies?

Thanks for the memories Scott7,

Morfe

"Dartmoor, there is more there than are dreamed of in all of our philosophies?"

Pete Glastonbury says that he moved to *Avebury* because he couldn't cope with the sheer number of monuments etc in Dartmoor - thousands and thousands apparently

says something when you have to move to Avebury to get a break from the neolithic ...

anyway, what about the Chilterns?!? Strange how Chequers is slap bang in the middle of a load of hillforts ...

I didn't think I was the only one that found Dartmoor to be a unique place on the planet.

Great story Morfe! There really is something special about the whole area, and we must have come across at least 10 sites while we were there.

It's one of those places where the atmosphere is so thick, and yet so calm. I could literally feel something deeper, I don't know, something that went straight to my neurons! Crazy.

We met only one other group of people the entire time we were hiking around, and they asked us if we were "letterboxing".

It was one of those situations where I couldn't even attempt to explain why we were there.

So instead of some eloquent reply, I said "Nope, just walking around, seeing the sites", which probably confused them even more!

Ha! Ha! Viva Dartmoor! The next big trip has to be Callanish!
