I dunno, I think he was on to something. There just hasn't been someone who has tried to apply those theories to the icons of the second half of the twentieth century, but that's coming. I'm sure of it.
I should add that I don't think Warhol ever quite understood exactly what he wrought, but that's actually good - too much self-awareness, like too much self-consciousness, is, IMO, the enemy of good art. Both of the above are responsible for the so-called ironic crap that's been ruining popular culture for the last decade-plus.
