Sternenmädchen: GILLES ZEITSCHIFF 2 (2023)

BEWARE.

This recent release of recordings by Sternenmädchen and associates made in Milan (1972) and Köln (1974) with the assistance of Jürgen Dollase and Harald Grosskopf from Wallenstein; Stephen Kaske (Mythos), Roberto Cacciapaglia and a few appearances by Sternenmädchen Gille show the whole Kosmischen Kuriere trip as it finally fell apart.

The tracks "Tutenchanamun," "Leonardo," "Beethoven" and "Tarot" reflect Gille's then-current obsessions, as noted in a Cosmic Couriers press release from the time:

"Our favorite composer is Ludwig van Beethoven. Our aesthetic orients itself about Tutench-Amun. Our star is Leonardo da Vinci, who showed the world for the first time that everything is possible."

Since Italian classical musician Roberto Cacciapaglia released an album on Kosmische Kuriere called SONANZE (1975), it would seem to indicate that the classical elements found on GILLES ZEITSCHIFF 2 would be from his hand.

Ultimately, one is left with the feeling that these sessions were not finished.

But if they were, then what one is left with is a lot of promise with no payoff whatsoever. Parts of the first track, "Overtüre," held the most promise but by album's midpoint, an overwhelming sense of underwhelment grew. Was it the middling and sehr unkosmische classical vamping? The hamfisted Elton John piano block chording courtesy of the Wallenstein geezer? Or becoming tired of counting the scant appearances of Gille Sternenmädchen?

A Cosmic Jokers/Sternenmädchen album without any Klaus Schulze or Ash Ra Tempel involvement shows exactly how astonishing their contributions were on those original albums from 1973-1974.

Don't expect an album approaching this (let alone the original GILLES ZEITSCHIFF) and you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the warning Seth. I was contemplating picking this one up, as I just picked up the other Cosmic Joker reissues. There are good reasons some things stay unreleased.

Here's to them putting out more reissues of those KR originals that are prohibitively expensive. The Dieter Dierks archives seem to be quite a treasure trove.

Thanks for the mini-review. I haven't heard it yet, and didn't even know that it existed before your comments, but am now super excited. I love the Rolf & Gille trip, and this seems like another vital component, even if it is ultimately second- (or third-) tier. It seems like some of the recent Cosmic Jokers and Walter Wegmuller reissues contain different mixes and even snatches of "new" material, such as parts of the fabled collaboration with Tangerine Dream. Don't know if it warrants buying them all over again, but it certainly leaves me intrigued!

Got the CD in the mail earlier this week and I've got to say it's lovely. A fully realized, super optimistic vision. What a way to go out!

Rolf & Gille are the Adam & Eve of Rock & Roll and this is them leading us back to the Garden of Even.

Summer of 2023? Seriously, though, it's a great album. RPI is my second favorite genre after krautrock, so I love the LP's over-the-top classical flourishes. I dig Mythos, Wallenstein, the Starmaiden and the whole super-optimistic Cosmic Courier trip. Paradise is here, now.

I suppose if one has a narrow, purist definition of "krautrock," in which the only artists that matter are the ones mentioned in krautrocksampler, they might be initially disappointed with the release. But open your ears, get high, and let the positive energies flow.

As I said before, it's the perfect end to the Kaiser-Starmaiden saga.

Oh summer of 2023, well that explains (part of) it. Uh huh, uh huh, I can get that. I can dig all of those artists at least to some extent. I guess it could be, yeah. But is it though, really (I mean, REALLY??!)..? Haha.

Umm. Ok. Yeah! But I still can't help thinking you're perhaps confusing "second-third tier" with plain unfinished non-deliverance..?

I don't think that it is.

It's not a second-third tier release, and it's not unfinished. It's a bona-fide krautrock classic!! The only way it could have been better would be if Peter Geitner (is he still alive?) designed the cover.
