Keith Levene RIP

Jeez, what a week:

And Rab Noakes too:

RIP to both: true musical explorers in very different - but equally valid - ways.

After almost 43 years of listening to Metal Box, it is still one of my faves and a game changer, though my 11 year old self did not know that at the time as they played all 3 discs on a low-fi mono record player. And after over 40 years of playing guitar, "Pop Tones" still baffles me and leaves me in wonder ... RIP Keith!

Poptones is just extraordinary. That Whistle Test performance might be the coolest thing that was ever on telly.

Indeed! One of my biggest regrets in life was not seeing that live on telly at the time. I was only 11 and not allowed to stay up that late (I would however often be under the covers with earphone listening to John Peel and hoping that the sound of the tape going round and round when recording Peel Sessions would not be heard). My friend who was a year and half my senior did see it and I got an in depth description of the performance the following day in school. However, to give him justice, he deserved it because I was the one who managed to get Metal Box for Christmas, whilst he missed that and got the Second Issue instead ...

Oh those days when TV was live and there were no video recorders or YouTube etc!
