ENGLAND EXPECTORATES (2022)
Oct 03, 2022, 04:06
Who could forego the US American radio edit and utterly catchy Can-effect of "England Expectorates"?

Or the twilight tiptoe of "Exiled On Hoy"?

And that deathly quietude that pierces "Hillary In Benghazi"?

Or the weirdly upbeat, sprightly rhythm and thoughts of "Prodigal Sun" and not think: Hey, this coulda been a huge hit in 1990CE?

Or just the title of "Dickless And Ridiculous" without mentioning the fragile and heart-rending glockenspiel and mellotron edging?

Or "Lard Ass Of The Year," with its soaring (and falling) glam dicenn and it's abrupt US radio edit that makes it even more memorable?

Or the Ur-Ramones/Alice Cooper death trip of "I'm Bloody Sure Your On Dope" and think: best title in search of a song, ever? (Fans of the Knack can fuck off!)

Or the weirdly mesmerising "Boris Good-Enough" without thinking of Alice shagging Kiss with a glitterstompf beat that goes sideways to make you forget yourself?

Or the thoughts of "The Day After The Aberfan Disaster" floating so quietly downstream on your mental lotus leaf just in time to realise it is too, too deathly aware?

Or the catchiness of "All The Yin-Yangs That Gave It Away" and not be reminded of Lou Reed's closet mix of the 3rd VU LP while simultaneously wanting to divest yourself of online slavery? (Command option shift um-nah!)

Or the glorious "Heathen Night," which is quite possibly the best B-side Cope has ever written....but wound up as track 11? The slinky, roamin' in the gloamin'-ness and that bass wrapping itself around your head? Like that?!

Or to consider that the Can/J-Div bass-led prophesy of "I Know what It's Like To Be Believed" is nothing less than a catchy reminder that (even at this late stage in the game) that Cope has long grasped truth in his hand and let it fall forth throughout this track with accompanying TX horn blare decoration?

And finally: to realise that "Cunts Can Fuck Off" should be single of the year. Yeah, but everybody was too busy shoring up their own cultural divisions online by killing critical thought via echo chamber applause...

Online it's always the same. It's always lame.

"Think. It ain't illegal yet." - George Clinton, 1978CE

Album of the year. And there it was, only you didn't know it yet.

Nice one Seth. Funny you mention the VU closet mix, as I've been getting that Julian-is-singing-right-beside-me vibe from his last few albums, but especially on EE.

Great, man. Thanks!
What was the earliest that that cropped up? (Off the top of my head, I think the line "With a tacky sense of humour/and a true sense of the moment" from "Don't Call Me Mark Chapman." Back in 1994, during the first couipla play, it always startled the hell out of me.)

What a line, and delivery. I'm trying to clean up my act so that I might live long enough for the Notes on that early 90s trilogy of Genius. I mean: holy crackers.

Yes, I suppose he has been doing that for a while. EE certainly pulls out the 90s Cope vibe all over the place that I hear. The bass lines especially remind me of 20 Mothers. I should really spin Drunken and Self Civil again, as those did not excite me initially. Truly Cope has yet to put out an inferior album, and returning listens certainly pay dividends.
