Stevo wrote: I thought the How To Buy thing was a feature of Mojo. YThere is some attention being payed to Stereolab in a few places this month since their odds and ends compis have been compiled together as a box set which came out a couple of weeks back. The odds and ends comps are definitely the most essential Stereolab albums. Always thought their best cuts were the singles and EP tracks. I had a feeling 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup' would make no.1 in Mojo's How To Buy list (can't believe they only just got round to doing The Beach Boys last month, and were able to cheat a bit by counting 'two-fers' as a single release), but for me it was the real turning point where the 'Lab started to move away from what made them one of my favourite bands in the first place. From then on I still admired the increasing skill and sophistication that went into their music, while finding a whole album too much of that sort of thing. 'Dots & Loops' and 'Cobra & Phases...' are both super accomplished, but I find my brain switching off after the first few tracks. The earlier simpler stuff is what made them really exciting, with the enjoyably anarchic 'Transient Random Noise Bursts...' being my favourite of their non-comp long players.

Ha ha, Dots and Loops and Cobra and Phases are my fav 'Lab' albums', with Switched on Vol:2 and Emperor coming up close behind. The only album by them that I really didn't like was Sound Dust, it was just that easy listening vibe too far. I've not played it in years, so maybe I should give it another spin, my tastes may have adapted a little. Chemical Chords, their last but one release is a stormer too.

I'm really interested in getting the BBC sessions album ABC Music, but it seems it's only available as an expensive import via Amazon/eBay, CD format only it seems. Anyone got this? Is it worthy of investment?

It's OK. Most versions don't stray from the original if I recall correctly. Can rip you a copy if you fancy, but meantime, some kind folk has put the whole thing up on youtube for your aural delight... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwO6H2RwEnM Some up on discogs fer around the 17/18 quid mark (which INCLUDES shipping costs) if you feel you need a physical copy https://www.discogs.com/sell/listsort=price%2Casc&limit=25&master_id=35230&ev=mb I suspect, seeing as most of the other comps have had a reissue, that this may get one at some point (BBC willing I guess). I don't know, but If you don't have much stereolab, this is a good career overview... https://open.spotify.com/album/3tDKIQKwfl2LIAOGRpGbAP
