Lay Llamas – Thuban. Italian psych guys move further into Afro-groove waters, leading to inevitable Goat collaboration. But there’s also an excellently crackers track featuring Mark Stewart reciting what sounds like the treatment for some sci-fi zombie game for Playstation. Great lead single: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRboTUI5ads

Needlepoint – The Diary Of Robert Reverie. Scandinavians doing a spookily accurate impression of the early 70s Canterbury sound with a bit of jazz fusion thrown in. Nice if a bit nebulous.

Pelagos – Revolve

The Common Cold - Shut Up! Yo Liberals!

Steve Tibbetts – s/t. Why have I never heard of this guy before?? He went on to ECM, but this self-released, home-recorded debut from 1977 is an astonishing, visionary album, part virtuoso acoustic folk/blues, part synapse-blasting cosmic electronica. Honestly, you have to give this a listen: https://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/album/steve-tibbetts-hd-882k-24b

Melodic Energy Commission – Stranger in Mystery. Canadian art rock/new age oddity featuring Del Dettmar from Hawkwind. It’s a bit hippie-strange-all-over-the-place, but some might say preferable to what HW themselves were doing in 1979… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U_rAR5CsHQ

Van Der Graaf Generator – Live at Rockpalast. DVD and double CD of German concert from 2005, which is cracking, though definitely not for faint-hearts. Some might say a little VdGG goes a long way, and it’s certainly quite exhausting by the end, but fans will lap this up (even though it’s already been posted in its entirety online): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKRppguloag

Listen With Father:

Choice cuts from the compilation this week include Saxon’s ‘Wheels Of Steel’, which on re-listening nearly 40 years on is ludicrously, maniacally fixated on that riff, and Slade’s awesome ‘Look Wot You Dun’, which, along with David Essex’s ‘Rock On’, is one of the few songs most accurately described as ‘doom glam’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dWBFZpIwT0

Julian Cope - Rave o lution EP, Interpreter. Such is fate, I didn't particularly enjoy the latter this time

Bill Callahan - Apocalypse

The Charlatans - Some Friendly. ?

The Cure - 4:13 Dream. It's improving, I'll give it that. Maybe not down to them though

Coldcut - Sound Mirrors

The Chameleons - Strange Times

Cluster - Sowiesoso. Very much getting to appreciate these guys now

Pharoah Sanders - Karma

Can - Ege Bamyasi, Monster Movie

Caribou - Andorra

Michael Chapman - The resurrection and revenge of Clayton Peacock

Deerhunter - Cryptograms. Superb psych

Elbow - A Cast of Thousands. This is pretty good. Don't think much of his radio show though, but then I'm full of love like that

Brian Eno - The Shutov Assembly, Nervenet. The former wins out

The Earlies - Those were the Earlies

The Editors - The Back Room

Espers - II

Cluster & Eno - S/T

Fujiya & Miyagi - Transparent Things. Nearly alright

Kevin Ayers - The Unfairground. Knowing the vague events of his passing, this takes on a really dark tone and suddenly the clues were all there

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic. Can't make out if this is a dog's dinner or has one or two tricks up its sleeves. Not a fav anyway

Fuck Buttons - Street Horrsing, Tarot Sport. The latter wins out. The former gets thrown away, but then it was only a cdr

The Grails - Doomsday Holidays

Sarah Gillespie - In the current climate. Don't mind it being in my collection that much

Philip Glass - The Light, Heroes Symphony

PJ Harvey - Stories from the City Stories from the Sea. A few times actually

808 state - Ex:El. Best I've ever heard it. Maybe I should take the praise for that?!!!

Akron/Family - Meek Warrior

Alabama 3 - Outlaw. First time i've given this a proper airing and glad I made the effort

Amadou & Miriam - Dimanche a Bamako. Jolly affair

Bas Jan - Yes I Jan. Serafina has proper indie writing chops. Love her lyrics and the songs aren't that bad either. One of my albums of the year so far

Bernhard Cribbins bits and bobs

Beta Band - XFM Session

Bjork - Volta. Quite enjoyed this. Much more than Vespertine which is overdone IMO

Black Submarine - New Shores. Moody Indie/Alt Rock. Not bad as it goes
