Fall Compilation
Apr 04, 2018, 15:45
Like many Fall fans (I'm sure) I have spent my time ploughing through that large Fall back-catalogue since Mark passed away but rather than focus on the Brix years I grew up with or the more punky early stuff I also knew I was eager to discover the stuff I'd missed. This being stuff from the second half/later part of The Fall's mighty history. So it almost became like a project or a mission and I went through the last 15 Fall studios one by one but not in order. I was pleasantly surprised and even discovered FALL HEADS ROLL, IMPERIAL WAX SOLVENT and THE NEW REAL FALL LP are infact amazing albums that stand up as classics alongside THIS NATION'S..., DRAGNET, GROTESQUE etc... BUT in all honesty I have also got many favourites such as The Unutterable, Reformation TLC, Sub-Lingual, Missing Winner, Levitate etc....etc... I only really find Ersatz GB hard going. So anyway as a result of all this I made my own compilation album. The title "Fifteen Minus One" stems from the fact I took fifteen albums and selected one tune from each.

I was careful what I picked and was keen to make a compilation that perhaps covers all Fall angles. I chose not to go for singles as you can get Fall singles compilations easy enough which cover this and also avoided obvious choices and biggies like "Blindness" etc.. Cover versions are a plenty through The Fall's history so I've highlighted this with Mark's version of Wanda Jackson's rockabilly classic "Funnel Of Love" and even included an Elena lead-vocal tune to show the diversity of The Fall's music. Some may pick holes and disagree with my selections which is fine but it is interesting people like different stuff from different times and anyway you could always make yer own compilation if you don't like mine! I'd love to see the results! Maybe I should have named this post "Fall Compilation Challenge!"

So here we go.... fifteen songs/one-each from The Fall albums "Cerebral Caustic" in 1995 right through to the final album "New Facts Emerge" in 2017....

VENICE WITH THE GIRLS
BOURGEOIS TOWN
WOLF KIDULT MAN
MASK SEARCH
ASSUME
LIFE JUST BOUNCES
OPEN THE BOXOCTOSIS 2
INTERLUDE/CILINISM
WAY ROUND
FUNNEL OF LOVE
THE WRIGHT STUFF
JETPLANE
THE CRYING MARSHAL
I COME AND STAND AT YOUR DOOR
NINE OUT OF TEN

Was going to write which album each track comes from but got lazy from all the typing towards the end. Can do if anyone requests.

Nice one Paul..

You’re bringing back memories for me.

First saw The Fall in the early eighties and lastly at Bearded Theory last year. Mark was looking very unwell and nobody’s heart really seemed in it. They played Lunar Festival a couple of years earlier which was the best I’ve ever seen ‘em. Crowd loved it.
Julian played on the Sunday.Turns out a friend of a friend turned him on to acid...do we shake that man by the hand? Ooh what’s that on the floor?

Maybe you should have named this ‘Fall Compilation Challenge’
I thought it said ‘Fail Compilation’ uh?

New glasses please...

Thank you for this. I too was mainly concerned with early Fall stuff. I wasn't too concerned even with Brix stuff, apart from a few obvious gems. I have immersed myself since Mark E's death again & am astonished by how obsessively i can play the same stuff over & over & not get tired of it. I really should break the habit again soon. I listen to them lately exclusively; they become an ear worm. I'll have to wean myself off again. You're compilation isn't helping sir!
The Fall were a slow burn for me. The first song i heard was Rowche Rumble late one night on John Peel. I still remember how it affected me but didn't pursue them. Later i obviously became passionate. I'm desperate for my boys to get it, but they resist, as i suppose I did initially. I try hard not to ram it down their throats! My youngest says they sound like a " pub" band ( which he obviously thinks is an insult.) It's like they just will not listen. It's a swine x

I gotta say I'm loving this compilation! Not your usual suspects. Nice to hear some tracks I was previously unfamiliar with, despite being a long time fan.

It's certainly brightened my commute. Thank you! :)

Hex Induction Hour

Listening to Hex Induction Hour for the first time in ages I'm astonished at how much the Pixies are indepted. The Pixies also being a band i love x I know they did a cover of Big New Prince when they played Manchester a while back. Mark E said it was shit of course, or words to that effect.

Cheers. My three fave latterday Fall numbers are probably Crop Dust, Blindness and Mike's Love Xexagon
