Berg's Lulu

I went but missed the last act as I must have either misread the website or they'd made a mistake. I swear it stated 7-10pm, so I assumed it was a short opera with one interval. I needed to catch the last train from Hamburg and didn't get home till 4.30am, but my efforts were nothing compared to Hannigan's!

I'm glad I went. It was my first major modern concert and I enjoyed it very much. It took until the end of Act I for me to settle into it - I was more intrigued than blown away, initially. I have since read critics' takes of this version and others. I liked the dream-like nature of this performance, with the performers somewhat detached and unanimated, excepting Lulu: to say I was impressed with Hannigan's physical feats is an understatement! The major disappointment was having to leave early. I actually would have liked it to have gone on for days. I don't think it will be my last visit to a modern concert. Thanks!

So glad you dug it. Funnily enough I made the same mistake. First two parts were fine but I had not realised that they had inserted the entirety of the violin concerto into the opera and thus in effect extended it by a full hour. Having been up since 4am to get the 9am flight over I was in no fit state for a four hour show and nodded off. Hannigan was amazing, orchestra was amazing. I was less excited by the staging but very well worth the trip.

It is an interesting time for new music. Went to see Alison Balsom at a packed RAH yesterday afternoon. Numbers alone would suggest that this was an audience more attuned to Classic FM than the avant garde, but to her credit, alongside the Vivaldi, Handel, the Piaf, the show tunes and the hard bop stuff, Balsom played music by three modern composers (all of it fairly challenging) including a piece by Gabriel Prokoviev that sounded like Miles Davis accompanying Burial. Or a grittier version of Jon Hassell's "Power Spot". All things considered these pieces went down brilliantly. Just goes to show that you can turn people on to unfamilar stuff if you give them half a chance. And you don't have to lure them to Dalston to do it!

But that violinist was brilliant, wasn't she?

I don't blame you making the effort whilst Hannigan is on form like this. Thanks for this nod and the others above. Further recommendations welcome. Off to Paris tomorrow, so got to dash.

Cheers!

Have a good one. She really is a one off. That said if you get a chance to hear this in a live setting ....

Those cymbals made me jump! Fantastic - yes, I'd go to hear that. It still has enough musical interest for my tastes and the experiential aspect must be intense and fascinating.

Have you seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yIsScgpNoA ?

Hardly modern (Purcell!) but this ensemble are wonderful. Hear Andreas Scholl singing Cold Song at 35'20"...

I love his voice. If you like Scholl you are probably going to love Jaroussky if you are not there already ....
