BUY IT: May You Never - The Essential John Martyn. I looked at the cover, thought, before studying the contents thoroughly, 'gawd they're milking it'...then the words Glistening Glyndebourne Alternative Version Previously Unreleased caught my eye...and then the alternative takes of quite a few more, and also realised that as Island's archives have been in such a mess these could be fresh finds by a man with a torch...and then the price in my good friend Barry's Record Collector rack: £5-99. For a triple box. My wallet was out at faster than a creeping pace, and I am listening now and smiling. 'Tis lovely. Really. EDIT: on reading the notes under each CD, looks like most alt takes were on The Island Years b u t since I don't have that, am still blissed......A lovely quiet mastering job too, that breathes, even with crap headphones. Have it.

Good to see this has already made some folk want to reach for their wallets.... I was giving it a good listen for the first time round my mate's last night. There's nothing not to like, and a huge amount to love. A record that has been done right. This music is music that is medicinal, and that, to me, is the ultimate compliment. The anniversary of the man's death is at the end of this month. He still lives.

I think I saw that in Fopp for almost the same price. Was just thinking I should have grabbed it.
